Branko’s Grave

Branko’s Grave, a memorial dedicated to the famous Serbian Romantic poet, Branko Radičević (1824–1853), is located on top of Stražilovo, near Sremski Karlovci. Branko used to be a student of the Gymnasium of Karlovci, and this period of his life was immortalized in his best known poem „Đački rastanak” (the Parting of Schoolfriends), where he glorified Sremski Karlovci and the youthful life in them.

30 years following the poet’s death in Vienna, his bones were transferred to Stražilovo, and with the charity of the Serbian community, a stone memorial in the shape of a pyramid was built there. The stones within the foundations were brought from many regions where Serbs lived. Every block is marked with the location it originates from. The memorial was destroyed during World War II, but it was rebuilt shortly after.
